If you ask someone what they want, I think a culvert isn’t going to be high on the list for most people. But this culvert provides a hugely important connection between Morrisville and Bristol on the D&L Canal. People don’t know what they’ve been missing!
The D&L Canal Towpath starts in Bristol and heads towards Morristown. You can take a 35 minute train ride from Center City Philadelphia with your bike to Bristol and follow the trail along the Delaware Canal to Easton. At Easton, the trail follows the Lehigh River through Bethlehem, Allentown, Jim Thorpe, Whitehaven, and all the way north to Wilkes-Barre.
In Wilkes-Barre, you can meet up with the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Trail (in progress) and make your way up to Simpson, which is the start of the D&H Trail. The D&H Trail brings you all the way to the NY Border.
I’ve highlighted a map that Bob Thomas, Andy Strauss and I worked on together for the William Penn Foundation.
My walk along the D&L yesterday started in Morrisville by Ben’s Deli, recommended to me by Andy Strauss. I think Andy must be getting tired of me asking him to go on outings with a half hour’s notice. I walked south about 2.5 miles and turned around.
